Why
Vanilla
The Vanilla Concept represents seven key influencing qualities by
imagery from classical Greece and Rome. There is a brief summary below.
For more detail, visit the 'Hall
of Mirrors'.
•
VULCAN - THE GUTS AND
INNOVATION TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY
Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and spirit and creativity. His counterpart
in Classical Greece was Hephaestos who was depicted as lame - a
craftsman who overcame personal disadvantage to achieve, making
the most of what the world had thrown at him.
•
ATHENA – GROUNDED
GOOD SENSE
Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and good sense
•
NEREUS – THE CAPACITY
TO PUT ONESELF IN THE SHOES OF OTHERS
Old man of the sea who possessed two important influencing qualities
– (i) the ability to be as others are and to see as others
see, and (ii) the magnanimity to give fair praise to others
•
ICARUS – THE READINESS
TO TAKE A RISK
The son of the great Greek inventor, Daedalus, who created wings
for man to fly. Icarus tested the wings and reminds us of two things
– that risk taking extends our capabilities and moves the
world on, but that over confidence can be dangerous. (Icarus did
not heed his father’s warning, flew too near the sun and fell
to his death when the wax in the wings melted).
•
LUDUS – COMMUNICATING
A CLEAR SENSE OF DIRECTION ABOUT THE OVERALL GAME PLAN
Ludus, the Latin word for game.
•
LAUREUS – SETTING,
ATTAINING AND MAINTAINING HIGH STANDARDS
Laureus is the crown of laurels awarded to the winner of the ancient
Olympic games – the ultimate recognition of high standards
•
APOLLO – SIMPLIFYING
COMPLEXITY, OFFERING SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND AND
BUY INTO
Apollo, the Sun God, throwing light on complexity.
These seven influencing qualities are the
theme of the Vanilla Concept. We have designed four development
programmes that draw on these elements. Visit each of the rooms
to find out more.
